We see reality through our own lens of perspective
Others do the same
So the same reality is not experienced by any two people
The actual is hidden
Then our behaviours are seen by others and interpreted
Through their lens
The thoughts, feelings, motivations and reasons are guessed
Misperceptions
As people talk about others’ behaviour and guess the intentions
Rumours
Then the diluted truth is circulating through the minds of others
Gossip
Adding to their picture of reality and their dialogue towards that person
Mistaken identity
So communication is the key to understanding others
Curiosity & Questions
Direct reports fill the gaps or fix the misconceptions
Realization
Sometimes the answers are best left unsaid
Treacherous
Perhaps for self-preservation, to protect others or avoid awkwardness
Safeguarding
Honest communication can help to align realities and perceptions
